Primary Wire – SXL Primary Hook Up Wire Information
Primary wire is defined as low voltage hook up wire rated for a higher than standard temperature due to its part PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) part Polyethylene insulation. Hvac Capacitors Primary wire is used mainly in the automotive industry for servicing cars, boats, trucks, buses, tractors and trailers when low voltage and higher temperatures are the main concerns of the application.
Voltage
SXL Primary wire is rated for only 60 volts and should not be used in applications that require anything higher. UL1007 approved hook up wire is an upgrade in voltage to 300 volts but it will be rated for a slightly lower temperature so be careful to check both ratings before switching.
Temperature
SXL primary wire has a (XL) cross linked polyethylene insulation included in the construction in order to rate it at 125ºC which is about 20ºC higher than standard PVC insulation. UL1007 approved hook up wire is only rated for 105ºC along with UL1015 approved 600 volt PVC wire. Motor Mounts If your application requires a higher temperature rating you should see TEFLON® wire, or PTFE insulated wire, that reaches 200ºC.
Bare Copper Strands
Primary wire used bare copper strands instead of tinned copper or silver plated copper because there typically isn't a soldering process involved. The additional tin coating over the bare copper strands is used in some hook up wire construction so that the tin melts slightly and adheres to the solder in order to make a better connection. Automotive wire doesn't have a soldering process so the strands are simply bare copper.
The copper strands are also very inflexible compared to other types of hook up wire. Each strand is bigger and there are less strands used to manufacture the same gauge size as a flexible UL1007 wire. For instance, UL1007 14 AWG wire uses 41 strands of 30 AWG and Primary wire 14 AWG uses 19 strands of 27 AWG. The bigger strands are less flexible creating a stiffer wire that doesn't bend quite as easy as the UL1007 wire.
SXL primary wire is used in the automotive industry for electrical wiring where low voltage and high temperature is needed. This particular wire is also SAE International Surface Vehicle Standard J-1128 approved to be used in vehicles. Be sure to consult with your wire and cable supplier before purchasing the material for your application. They can help you save money by purchasing correctly and they can also aware you of environmental conditions that may affect or complicate your application.
