Cappadocia, Turkey's Geological Wonderland

Cappadocia is like being in a Lord of the Rings setting. The rocks are whipped into smooth, regular curves all around. It's almost like frosting on a cake. Take a walk out of Goreme to see the region's epicenter. You will pass green slopes with tender vines. Older men and women walk along double-decker goat paths, carrying firewood cargoes.

Beyond the autumn orchards, you will find yourself among fields of petrified toadstools that tower high above the sky. The renowned fairy chimneys of istanbul to cappadocia by plane are the result of Mother Nature, the ultimate sculptor. This volcanic terrain has been transformed by time into a moonscape that is twisted and whimsy.

These rocky cones have been used to build homes by man, following in the footsteps of nature. Some of these cave rooms have been converted into luxury hotels. You will find hundreds of stone-hewn churches, monasteries, and chapels as you walk around the valleys. You will find the faces of saints on the walls, arches and pillars that were carved 700-1,300 years ago by local Christians.
