Balancing Work and Pregnancy: How to Prioritize Your Health

work balance during pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a demanding phase of your life – both emotionally and physically. You need to eat in balance, drink plenty of water and be active to nurture the little one growing inside you healthily.

However, if you are a working would-be-mom, you need to take care of your physical and emotional health while managing your work. After all, pregnancy doesn’t mean you’ll have to give up on your career and the aims of your life.

Therefore, here are the following tips to balance your work and family life:

Communicate with your employers

Tell your managers, supervisors and close colleagues about your pregnancy. Keep them posted about the changing trimesters of your pregnancy. Also, let them know about your due date and when you need to be taken to the hospital. Some of you may need maternity leave. In that case, if you are in a senior position, you need to delegate work to your juniors appropriately.

Prioritise your work based on your responsibilities

Ensure that you make a list of important work responsibilities for the day and set the deadlines for each work. All you need to do is focus on the most important work of the day.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you’re going to work regularly and you have your colleagues near you ensure that take their help. You’d need assistance with your tasks or errands. Even if you are on maternity leave and need help with your household chores you can ask for help from your partner or relatives or domestic help. Lifting heavy loads can be potentially harmful to your baby.

Be in comfy clothes and shoes

Wear comfy cotton clothes and shoes in your workplace while you’re expecting. Always go for loose-fitting – stretchy – cotton or linen clothes. Also, choose those shoes that fit you well.

Avoid sitting or standing for a long time

Sitting or standing for a long time can bring about back and leg pain as you proceed with your pregnancy. So, it is always advisable to adjust the height of your chair while you’re sitting at your desk and prop a foot on a short tool or box. Don’t forget to take breaks.

Drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet and try not to ignore the signs of discomfort in your body. Pregnancy and work need balance. Follow the tips and don’t miss doctor’s appointments whenever required.
