Goodbye letter, a model you can adapt and use

Introduction

A goodbye, or pen pal departure letter. Think about it, it's a courtesy your pen pal friend deserves. Have a look at this model, and adapt, edit, or write your own to suit. But do send a Goodbye letter – remember the Human at the other side of that screen.

That opened a new topic, where one of our Reddit users shared their suggestion of a letter for this difficult task. And it was a good one, we had comments and people using it for their own needs. So, time to bring it to our Blog and share with others.

It was inspired by another Reddit topic, which said :

I was reading Little Ghost's post about what to do when you have the urge to ghost. I have a couple of pen pals who, though lovely people, I just struggle to keep writing to, either because the conversations are a bit stale, they don't really respond to my questions or we just don't connect very much.

I know it's often a horrible feeling to be ghosted and Little Ghost's suggestion of honesty is a good one.

But have any of you ever experienced a letter where your pen pal honestly told you they felt you didn't connect well or have much in common? If so, how did it feel to receive that?

Thanks in advance!

And so we had a need and inspiration to share a real good bye letter, one that was written and sent, and served its purpose well. That original post is HERE.

Thank you to both posters for sharing their experiences.

A suggested model – adapt, edit, or use as is

Model letter follows, based on a real one I sent

Hello (friend's name),

Good afternoon (or evening).

I have been thinking about things in general, and wanted to write to you about our pen pal relationship.

Having thought about it, I feel maybe it's best if we disconnect as Slowly pen pals. In truth, we are quite different, in temperament, age and life experiences, culture, etc.

So maybe it's time to part? My feeling is that it might be better for both of us if there's less incoming mail.

Hope you don't mind, I find it hard to part with pen pals, but the courtesy of a last letter is always important, isn't it?

Thank you, have a good week.

(Your name, signing off) .
