Making the World Better – we need your Help
An appeal to the members at our Reddit sub
“Making the SlowlyApp sub a Better Place ? Yes, but — We need your participation too.”
The text on this post was originally in a Topic at the Slowly app Reddit sub. It was posted on May 28, and at that time I had been actively participating there for about a month.
Since discovering it, via a suggestion from a pen pal friend, it was clear that it had great potential and content — although sometimes it took some digging and separating the wheat from the chaff.
Fast Forward to August, 2020; 3 months later and I just searched for the topic, to re-post it with some updates. I am now an active moderator in the sub, and would like to encourage user's participation on it too.
More participation, a nice social climate builds communities were we feel attracted to join in and spend time, write and give our views, etc.

Very nice work as usual, dear colleague. :)
Sadly no replies – yet. I find these really expand a topic, engage the author, bring more curious people and invite more comments.
Wish people would recognize that — the is not TV, you need to add a contribution, and recognize the people already doing it.
A simple comment and thank you means a lot more than an Up Vote, imo, although this topic already has a number of them.
On Positive Feedback :
Being fairly new on actively using Reddit, the up and down voting things are the subject of some reflection for me; in some cases, I have some critical thoughts regarding that.
Positive reinforcement is what I believe is called for – a tap in the back a wattaBoy or watttaGirl short comment does make an author feel their effort is appreciated.
[ and the same applies to letters — you won't keep a good, deep writer for long unless you ENGAGE too ]
I have a theory that a lot comes from the way people see and use this site, or the Slowly app itself. It is my belief that both work optimally in a pc class device – not on a mobile.
Algorithms shape other places :
On FB, seeing Likes is maybe 10 times more common than even a one word reply. AND — their algorithms ARE watching that, a post will be displayed to maybe 10 people, and if there's not enough reaction, not to any more of your 200 “Friends” there.
A “Like” is a one touch on screen for a mobile user. It's more work, on a cumbersome touch screen keyboard, to provide a meaningful response.
I got sick and tired, of that manipulation and people not seeing my content. So, I left. Stopped posting there.
This Sub has great potential — there's nothing like it on the Net at the moment, as a live discussion and info resource for Slowly users.
Let's make this better.
Please consider this. I am volunteering for Moderator here, and this is my personal view of what a leadership position entails. The most important part, I believe, being Community Building, on a day to day basis.
Thank you, Ghost. Well done. :)
** And an Update and Repost, August 23, 2020 :
This topic was originally posted on May 28, 2020. At the time, I had volunteered to help and Moderate the sub.
Time passed, by July 14th or so I got a direct message with a surprise offer — to consider accepting that position. Which I had assumed was not going to happen, long before then.
Those who know me and who I chat with were dismayed in early June when I posted a note saying I had given up on my volunteering offer. Since a month had passed and no reply at all came from the sub's founder and at the time, the main moderator.
Most of the month of June I didn't post or even visit here much. And the sub's state was dismaying.
Your participation builds a nice social climate. We need you.
We CAN make the world a better place, but we need your help and participation. Please consider those points. Thank you !
- Post a little comment to new topics, which encourage the poster.
- Add replies and personal opinion, suggestion, share your experience.
- Ask Questions, add new topics, suggestions are also welcome.
- Give good content some love. Up voting a topic makes it more visible, and does NOT cost you anything -– the point you add to the topic does NOT come from your own Karma points stash.
- A thank you for some nice contribution encourages the poster or commenter.
Thank you for reading, any comments are most welcome.
