'Suggestions for You' – interesting penpal find
On 'Suggestions for You', I found a nice profile
For me, to have an About Me in a user profile is absolutely essential – otherwise I could not tell what this person is like, if we could have some good letters or enjoy a new friendship. I wouldn't pick a pen pal based on their age, and a few interest topics, an avatar and a username.
Turns out this person has a cool avatar, and a very good About Me, which immediately got my attention.
Lifelong explorer. Corporate type by day, unconventional rule breaker ... well, all the time. Chronicler of the wondrousness, poignancy, and absurdity of life. Drawn to interesting people like a moth to a flame. Sybaritic, word loving bon vivant. Old soul, young at heart. Fan of wit, warmth, wisdom. Oxford comma advocate . Snarky and sharp, compassionate and kind.
Looking for someone who can can joke, engage, introspect, and entertain. I will do the same, in turn.
A good write up did clinches the deal
The Oxford Comma reference made me smile, as very recently I made a Reddit post, linking to an excellent article on this subject at the WordCounter.net blog.
So I wrote them a letter, a nice first one. Polished and of course intending to cause a good impression and motivate a reply. Their About me, fully copied above, is outstanding, in my opinion.
And I wondered how would their inbox be, after being listed in that preeminent feature in Slowly – would they get many letters? Maybe too many, overwhelmingly so?
And it all turned out fine
The wait for the result wasn't long, thankfully; my letter was soon read, and a day later a reply was on its way. It just arrived, and being a shorter, first contact, makes for an easier reply.
So I selected it, to start a reading and reply session. The reply was enjoyable to write, and I think it can be helpful to other users, so I am posting it, sans any personal details or private bits (of which there are not many yet, as we are newly connected).
Hope you enjoy the reading. Big thank you to S.
Hello S.,
Good morning; it's early but I woke up and came check, maybe I can make a dent on the letters to be responded now in my inbox.
I was curious to see what your reply letter would contain, so I opened it first and now it's time to reply. My modus operandi, you see, I do not open a letter if I am not prepared, with time and energy, to respond to it immediately.
Thank you for your reply – and apologies if I dazzled you with my listing all that I am involved in regarding the Slowlyverse. 😉
A compliment on a job well done
Turns out I found your profile in the 'Suggested for you' feature, read and liked your About Me write up, to the point that I decided to try and make a connection.
You are probably new to Slowly, so welcome. If you have any questions, feel free to ask; I also haev a lot of reference materials for the various aspects of the app.
I use it almost 100% in my laptop, so it's much more convenient, fast and longer letters result. Do you know about the 'Web mode' that Slowly supports?
See the World, where letters are coming from
There's a World Map in slowly, one where you can see the incoming letters headed your way. It's great fun, and I enjoy seeing where they are originating, what is the place like, zoom in for details in the map, or out for a bigger picture. This can be used anytime you see a 'nn incoming letters' in the main app panel.
If you have an incoming letter from someone, take a minute and check it out — you will know where they were when their letter was sent. And I saw your letter coming from Texas. Wondered if I would luck out and not get a Republican penpal, I think I scored a win. 😛
And a gentle tip about the nice Stamps we have
We also have very pretty and enjoyable digital stamps – if you click on the one in a new letter editor, it will show you a list of the ones you have available, and you can pick which you would like to use. 🙂
I have read the story, very relatable, about Canada being like a very nice apartment right over a meth lab. Our national The Globe and Mail newspaper has an editorial piece that quotes that, no less!
If Canada could vote, Joe Biden would win in a landslide
Canada’s location, as comedian Robin Williams once put it, makes us the equivalent of a really nice apartment over a meth lab.
If the American family downstairs starts going to rehab and gets itself cleaned up, that will reduce the chance of them accidentally burning down our common home. And if they can evict the guy running the drug lab – which, as you may have noticed, is currently on fire – it’ll improve the neighbourhood, lower our property insurance rates and allow us to stop sleeping with one eye open.”
I had read another article at the Globe and Mail recently which also mentioned that memorable quote – which makes complete sense to us, as external observers but yet subject to consequences due to our close physical proximity.
Mention a better way to read and write in Slowly ?
Sorry for the length of the letter – considering you are probably using a mobile device to read and write, this might be long and hard to reply – but there's an easy fix if you have a laptop or desktop you can use. See the Web Mode guide, here :
A Laptop is the Best & Easy way to use Slowly
I am enjoying the weekend, and look forward to writing some nice reply letters today, as there are many new incoming letters from good pen pal friends.
Hope this doesn't overwhelm you, S. I am a Slowly power user, and it seems it's my path to help other users. Once a helper... 😊
Till next time, be safe,
Yann2.
